Combo Buckets

As if The Bucket System isn’t confusing enough, I decide to introduce the “Combo Buckets” to you. Let me explain what these are. (Use the image below for reference, it’s from The Memorial Tournament).

I’ll explain in detail below, but to summarize… Combo Buckets give you an idea of which golfers share more stats with previous top 10 golfers at this week’s tournament. That’s it.

To provide more detail…
I have each combo bucket separated by salary range (10K, 9K, 8K, 7K, 6K).  These ranges represent the traditional salaries that DraftKings provides. In 2024, they introduced the 5K range. In case of this scenario, please refer to the “Cheat Sheet” as I will convert those salaries to the traditional salary ranges.

In each of the combo buckets, you will see: CH, LY, RF AVG, LW next to the Salary and Player. These four stats represent the core stats used for The Bucket System. Refer to “The Bucket System” article to understand how the buckets are created.

To the right of the core stats, you will find each of the bucket combinations. These numbers represent the amount of times golfers with the same bucket combination finished inside the top 10 (of their respective salary). This is a count.

At the end of each table, you will see a “sum.” This is just the total of counts from the bucket combinations. The higher the number, the more common this golfer has with previous top 10 finishers.

So, what does this all mean? Why is this important?

Really, it’s up to you. I view these combinations as an easier way to find anchor plays. If golfers with higher “sums” are more likely to finish inside the top 10, why not anchor around them?

This is not fool-proof though. Any golfer that has a count of at least ONE (1) under any of their bucket combinations still has a chance to finish inside the top 10 of this week’s tournament. When I discuss “anchor buckets” in my videos, I always say: “just because they show up more does not guarantee they will finish inside the top 10. It just increases their chances.” The same thing applies here.

If you’re more advanced with your analysis, you should always take into account the buckets + the bucket combinations. Remember, the projections for the buckets are finite. Meaning, you only want 0-2 or 1-3 or 2-4 of golfers in a particular bucket. Remember this when looking at the combos. If you’ve hit your quota of golfers in a particular bucket, scratch the remainders of golfers in that bucket from your combinations. You can also use the buckets (or anchor buckets) to find quality golfers from the combo buckets.
